The Chicago White Sox lost again bringing their current record to 31-108 for the 2024 MLB season. The record post-1900 is owned by the 1962 New York Mets who went 40-120 in their inaugural season.
For the White Sox to avoid this unique distinction they’d have to finish the year at a 12-11 pace, which is unlikely given that playing .500 ball as eluded them by a wide margin. They are currently paced to end the year with a 36-126 record putting them at second worst ever behind the Cleveland Spiders of 1899 who went 20-134.
There are a number of remarkable things about the White Sox this season, they are slashing .219/.277/.338 which combines for worst of the league. They are also second to last in major pitching categories beating only the Colorado Rockies who will never have good pitching stats.
It all combines for what looks like the worst baseball team in 125 years which is pretty impressive, and for a sport obsessed with round numbers, kinda perfect.
