After a rough start to summer league where it seemed everyone was rooting for him to fail, Bronny James had his best offensive performance to date finishing with 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting. This included 2 of 5 shots from three (his first makes from that distance this summer).
The younger James has already shown his propensity to play defense picking up steals, blocks, deflections and rebounds throughout his summer league start. Being the son of one of the greatest and most scrutinized players of all time immediately put a harsh spotlight on Bronny. From claims that he was undeserving of the 55th pick by the Los Angeles Lakers to memes and outcry over his slow start, the media circus has fed off Bronny’s story.
For good reason. Just like his father Bronny drives engagement. For every fan complaining about Bronny’s media coverage there are multiple fans hanging on every shot attempt waiting to send the group chat another meme or joke.
Bronny has been one of the biggest attractions of Summer League in Las Vegas, driving ticket sales, ratings, and revenue. In some media outlets he’s garnered more ink than Team USA.
Fans seem both bothered and obsessed with this phenomenon ignoring that it is their own actions that drive it. Regardless of the nonstop hatred, James has been consistent in his mindset and media appearances. He’s just a second round pick trying to develop his game and contribute to his franchise.
What happens next is anyones guess. Lebron James Jr.’s story will continue to play out in the limelight even has his father’s illustrious career begins to fade to black. It’s safe to assume that no matter what Bronny does he’ll be followed by detractors. His father, despite being the all time leader in points scored, a singular talent with multiple championships for multiple teams, countless MVPS and All-Star appearances, and a record of zero controversy or public misbehavior of any kind despite while having been annointed ‘the chosen one’ before he could legally drive, has always found tons of vocal detractors and ‘haters’. Such is the nature of irrational fandom. Welcome to the league, Bronny.
