The Sultan of Swat continue to loom large over the Sports World 100+ years after his storied career began in Boston.
Babe Ruth put a charge into the sport of baseball in the 1920s and 1930s popularizing the home run, breaking every slugging record in sight, leading the Yankees to utter dominance, and capturing the national imagination.
Now he sets a new record with the sale of his jersey from the famous 1932 world series “called shot” for $24.12 million dollars.
Ruth famously posed pointing to deep center field in game three of the 1932 world series, and proceeded to smack a homer deep to center. The moment added even more lore to the already legendary figure, and now with multiple companies photo-matching the jersey in question to the game, the value and ensuing sale has become one of record.
To add to the legend, this was Ruth’s final world series appearance, homer, and win. Other items close in value are Shoeless Joe Jackson’s bat from his rookie year, Jackie Robinson’s jersey from 1950, Mickey Mantle’s jersey from 1953, and a Michael Jordan jersey from game one of the 1998 NBA finals.
